On the Rijndijk near Doornenburg, opposite Restaurant Rijnzicht, stands a bronze statue of a woman fleeing with her four children. The monument symbolises the war years in the Over-Betuwe region.
Many inhabitants of the Over-Betuwe fled in 1944 by crossing the Rhine over an emergency pontoon at Doornenburg to the still occupied north. Most of them were only able to return home months later.
The monument was designed by Renée van Leusden and unveiled in 2001.
Along with the unveiling, the book 'Bevrijdingsbloesem' was presented, in which Cissie Plattel Berben collected stories of evacuees.
