On 5 October 1942, the British RAF accidentally bombed large parts of South Limburg, particularly Geleen. As a result, 83 residents died and many were injured. The material damage was immense. Due to the bad weather, the British had dropped their explosive load at random over an area that was far too large.

This monument commemorates one of the aircraft involved in the bombardment, a Lancaster that crashed near the Brunssum neighbourhood of Leeuwstuk (nowadays Klingelsberg) after being hit by a German fighter. All seven crew members of the AVRO Lancaster R 5701 were killed.
